exit windowmaker hangs X, no return to xdm

Login with ssh via another machine and check to see if any processes are
still present under the Xorg, preventing it from exiting.  Something like
'ps axlR' nicely indents children relative to their parents.   If the Xorg
itself is gone, X may have exited but not been able to return to
syscons/vty mode.   You can also try running xdm manually instead from
/etc/ttys to see if that has something to do with it...  just do 'xdm' with
no arguments in that case.
