exit windowmaker hangs X, no return to xdm

Is anyone else using windomaker as the xdm session? I installed windowmaker:

pkg install xorg xf86-input-evdev windowmaker leafpad nautilus

echo "exec wmaker" > .xsession
echo "exec wmaker" > .xinitrc

vi /etc/ttys
ttyv8 " /usr/local.bin/xdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure

restart

and xdm comes up, log in and windowaker runs, but when I exit 
windowmaker, it just goes to black and doesn't end the session or go 
back to xdm. If i kill the Xorg process, it goes back to xdm and I can 
log in again, with the same result.

Thoughts?
