You are talking about pkg itself giving you trouble. You might have a
damaged system. Maybe you could try the D Ports collection:
https://github.com/DragonFlyBSD/DPorts
It sounds odd. It would be easier if you would copy&paste the errors you
see when you have these problems.
"man pkg" will tell you everything there is to know about pkg.
