how to update ports tree and use synth

Dear folks,

I decided to try synth and update from ports.  It is an awesome tool!
I like it.  However, I do not know how to update the ports tree, do I
use like
# portsnap fetch extract
or does synth take care of that automagically?

I had 562 packages to build and it built most of them.  Some failed.
Machine froze several times.  Here's part of log:
