Have you made sure xorg.conf looks okay? I had a similar issue and it turned out that when I ran Xorg -configure it had detected two monitors instead of one for some reason. I deleted the second monitor from my xorg.conf file and it fixed it.

In addition to what John said, xorg will log to /var/log/xorg.0.log or
something similar in name. If there's something that doesn't work, an
error with a code of (EE) will be logged, and that'll give you a hint
as to what caused any problems.
