Setting terminal in single user mode

System would not come up today; it showed that there is an error in 
/etc/rc.conf.

Tried to go into single user mode to fix, but TERM is not set so I can't use 
an editor.

Tried set 
TERM=vt100
TERM=ansi
TERM=cons

None worked.

Suggestions?

For editors tried both ee and vi
