nice -n 5 gives less frequent 'stutters'.  But still annoying.

nice -n 10 gives even less frequent stutters, but they still happen a few
times in the 1-2 minutes.  Still enough to be annoying.

nice -n 15 also gives the occasional stutter, but that's at least bearable.

nice -n 20 also gives the rare stutter.  This is more to what it should be
like.

Regardless of the mp3 playing.  If I have two separate makes, one a kernel
build and the other a port build, chances are big that one is constantly
consuming quanta and the other make might be happy to advance in its build
by the time the other is done building.
