Also if you have SMP and APIC defined but the machine doesn't have
APIC on the chips you will get this type of error.

?? I am really booting off the install cdrom I made from RELEASE_1_2 
yesterday. I would suppose that such cdrom would boot at least in safe mode.
CURRENT fomr 1 dec 2004 works fine, of course, lots of water have gone 
under the bridges since then.
