Well, that's the problem.

It should be starting with lightdm, but isn't.

It all ends quietly at the log in prompt.

Yes, I understand there is this alternate way to initiate a display, but 
what I need to know is the missing step in initiating lightdm to function.

I don't have the tech nous to set up a .xinit file properly.
