In a terminal, set the LANG environment variable (e.g., to en_US.UTF-8):

For csh: setenv LANG en_US.UTF-8
For sh: export LANG=en_US.UTF-8

Then you can see new locale settings with the 'locale' command.

And try to 'ls' your files to see whether you see the right characters.
