DragonFly bad performance with RIAK benchmark

Hi,

We are using RIAK as our database, and for various reasons (well, TrueOS 
has been abandoned...), we need to pick a new OS.

We have tested various Linux distros, FreeBSD, OmniOS, Solaris on 
identical hardware with identical tests. The hardware was intentionally 
iron, not virtual. It had 24 CPUs and 24 GB ram (strange config, I know, 
we only had that).

I have to admit that we are not really experts in tuning OS-es and 
benchmarking. We used the default setup for most OS-s, only tuning where 
it was inevitable (like changing maxfiles when RIAK complained). We used 
various forms of ZFS where we could. It didn't make much difference in 
Linux, ext4 had negligible differences. For DragonFly, we used it out of 
the box (latest, 5.8.1) with HAMMER2. We didn't change anything, and 
there was no swapcache (no SSD). DragonFly didn't seem to have an issue 
with the hardware. I attached dmesg.txt, the output of the dmesg command 
(after our tuning).

We have a standard "benchmark" for RIAK, single node, with two setups: 
with and without secondary indices. We use a lot secondary indices.

I put here some numbers, just to demonstrate the magnitudes. Results 
with indices are around 2.5 minutes for each OS and each setup plusminus 
like 10 secs, so they are pretty similar, and 1m10s without indices. The 
number of RIAK workers had perhaps the greatest impact on results but 
still not very substantial. RIAK workers is an internal parameter to a 
single RIAK node, it's not the number of nodes. As I've already 
mentioned, this is a single node test.

The only exception is DragonFly. It had 8m10s for the indices test and 
between 3.5 (50 workers) and 5 (25 workers) minutes for the noindex 
test. Our attempts to tune HAMMER was less than satisfactory, the 
indices test went up to 10m16s, demonstarting well the fact that we are 
amateurs. `rc.conf` and `/boot/loader.conf` is attached too.

DragonFly is otherwise very sympathetic to us, we don't understand why 
it's giving this quite bad result. Any idea?
