On another thread Peeter gave a solution that also worked with my setup (iwm0):

# /etc/rc.conf

    wlans_iwm0="wlan0"
    ifconfig_wlan0="WPA"

# Or /etc/rc.conf with DHCP

    dhcpd_enable=YES
    wlans_iwm0="wlan0"
    ifconfig_wlan0="WPA DHCP"

# /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

    network={
            ssid="my-ssid"
            key_mgmt=NONE
    }

# ifconfig wlan0

    wlan0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
            inet6 fe80::7670:fdff:fefa:5a3c%wlan0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x3
            ether 74:70:fd:fa:5a:3c
            groups: wlan
            ssid my-ssid channel 9 (2452 MHz 11g) bssid c8:be:19:88:20:29

            protmode CTS wme roaming MANUAL

            status: associated
