I agree.
There are already  some initiatives that already try to answer those problems
- FreeBSD Services Control (monitoring, restarting)

You can also think on jails for children containment (what systemd is
currently doing with cgroups).
IMHO working with small simple feature improvement  with rcNG glue is
a better way than introducing an SMF / launchd monster
