Have a 'modern printer', (deliberately) use lpr+=apsfilter.
Works fine- better even.
No crappy cups bloat,
except when some port depends on it in a braindead manner.
Probably the better way to put it is that cups has been
promulgated as the only way to print in bloated binary-only
linux distributions like RHEL and Ubuntu.
Embrace and extend - the Microsoft^W Google^W Linux way...
