You can actually do that - the -u option will get passed through to
the pkg_add command, so if you're reeeeeeeeally careful...  I managed
to get from I think the 3.0 release packages to 3.2 that way, though
there were of course some packages that needed a rebuild.

I'm not actually advising it; I'm more saying, "look at the crazy thing I did!"
