I had some successful experiences with FreeBSD 6.4 i386 to amd64 using
the swap partition as a temporary root.

- disable swap , format it, mount it
- install an amd64 world and kernel in it
- reboot on your new root
- install an amd64 world and kernel on the old root
- reboot on it
- enable the swap and recompile the packages
