:I looked around my system for what's taking up room and found 2.6 GB in this 
:directory, dating back to July. Some packages are present in three different 
:versions. I added it to the list of directories to clean periodically 
:(like /tmp). Do you think this change should be made in the base system?

    Hmm.  That directory is not part of the base system until you install
    pkgin.  We could pre-create it as its own HAMMER PFS but probably not
    for this release cycle.  I'm not sure why it is putting a cache there,
    maybe there is an environment variable or something we can set to
    change the location.
