oversized DMA transfer attempt

I have a DVD that a friend of mine sent me; I tried playing it on a Windows
box and got a misleading error message which turned out to mean a missing
codec, so I'm not expecting DF to play it anytime soon. But I put it in the
drive anyway and tried "file -s /dev/cd0", intending to try to mount it if I
can. file hung. I can't even kill it -9. I got the nightly message, which
contains a long scroll of lines like this:
> ata1: FAILURE - oversized DMA transfer attempt 131072 > 65536
> acd0: setting up DMA failed
Is there a fix for this?
