Seems like this is more confusing than necessary (as per usual).
This is part of the fonts.conf of my linux machine, so it is
probably not quite right for DFly:

<!-- Font directory list -->
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>
        <dir>/usr/local/share/fonts</dir> 					
<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts</dir>
        <dir>~/.fonts</dir>

If you have a fonts.conf in /etc/fonts you can try just making
a symlink to that file instead of writing a new one.  Worth a
try, anyway.  I'll try experimenting when I have more time.
