Hmmm.

I downloaded dltest.c from the link you'd mentioned and tried this on my box:

karthiks at odin: dltest $ gcc -L/usr/pkg/lib -lssl -o dltest dltest.c
karthiks at odin: dltest $ ./dltest
-- snip --
Seems to me there is nothing wrong with the lower layers.
