VMWare vs /etc/rc.d/syscons?

(warning: wild guess) Isn't that the point where the screen clears and
then prints something along the lines of 'showing the lines: invalid
argument'?  I remember discussion of this before, though not in terms of
vmware.  This may be tickling the serial port too, and causing the
problem.
