Problems booting - stack overflow at boot menu

I just pulled down the latest 1.6 snapshot (03-Oct-06) and it fails to boot.
When the loader menu is presented, I get a "stack overflow" error.

What's most odd is that I don't have a hexdump, but a repeating sequence of
15 spaces follows by ASCII 0x0F (star-like character).
