Is using HOST_CCVER=gcc41 for buildworld/buildkernel enough to

No, you need to set CCVER=gcc41. HOST_CCVER is just an internal
variable for the native binary build system, so that libgcc2 can be
compiled with the correct compiler (by changing CCVER) while native
host tools are built by the originally selected one.
