I tried again. I booted with LiveCD. Chose "6" for loader.
Typed "show" at the OK prompt.
It listed my variables like:
currdev=cd0:
loaddev=cd0:
But no rootdev.
I typed:
  set rootdev=disk0s4a
And then:
  set currdev=disk0s4a
And "show" showed them.
Then:
unload
boot
The kernel from hardisk appeared to load (no CD lights on).
Then after it showed acd0. it did:
Mounting root from cd9660:cd0c
cd0 at ata1 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
. ..
And my CD light was on and it booted the Live CD configuration.
Is this correct behaviour?
When I use "boot -s" and then exit the single user mode, it boots my
ad0s4a like I expect.
