compiling a mysql app

I'm getting this error when compiling a mysql test app:

cc -o myapp myapp.c /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.a

/usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.a(libmysql.o)(.text+0x1244):
In function `mysql_real_connect': 
: undefined reference to `__error'

what do I need?
