Is this a configuration issue, or does the snd_ich driver simply not support 
my sound chip?
it does not support your chip.  i have prepared a bit audio update from freebsd, including snd_hda, which will support it.  i don't have time right now to update the patch to the last kernel layout/busdma structure, so this won't happen until end of december, unless somebody beats me to it.
