pkgsrc survey

I don't know how practical my idea is, but this application should be
installed
as part of the bootstrap procedure done for pkgsrc; this way you can ensure
that everyone has it.

The next thing to do for saving people's time would be to add a commented
entry to crontab or something like that, so all that needs doing is
enabling it.

Please consider installing pkgsrc/pkgtools/pkgsurvey and running it.

It will email your hostname, your operating system processor and
version, and list of your installed packages to an email alias setup by
a member of the pkgsrc Project Management Committee.

I have been told that email addresses and individual machine release
levels will not be divulged to anyone and that only information relating
to packages and pkgsrc will be used and will only present that to people.

Consider only submitting a survey once per month; maybe a monthly job
could be useful to spot trends. (Also the pkgsrc-pmc member has advised
some people to use some form of passive IDS like tripwire or aide,
depending on the results. He'll continue to do this.)

p.s. I hope to find out what packages are widely used for preparing a
DVD. If you are interested in a DVD with packages, please let me know.
Also, I will use this information to help better use my time for porting
pkgsrc packages to other (non-NetBSD) pkgsrc platforms.

p.p.s. If you use dfports, then maybe just send your dports pkg_info
output to me directly.
