I'm sorry Joege, but if you think there is no pci-x hardware,
or you don't know the difference in cpu usage between regular PCI ethernet devices and PCI-X devices, then you really
aren't qualified to comment on the matter. I'm sorry if that
offends you, but you seem to not know what is going on in the real world. I'm baffled by some of the things I'm hearing here, frankly.
The bottom line is that you can't run gigabit on a bus that
only bursts to a gigabit/sec (regular pci), so I dont see
how you can be the one the works on gigabit drivers when
you don't understand the relationship between the bus and
throughput capabilities. There is nothing "strange" about
the requirement. You triple the real capacity of the system
with a 133Mhz bus vs a 33Mhz bus. Its an absolute
requirement for anyone who knows what he's doing.
