getting CVSROOT without cvsup... pkgsrc

I'd like to download the entire CVSROOT of pkgsrc for local
checkouts and maybe modifications for a problem I'm experiencing.

I tried '-r cvs' hoping it would work like cvsup, but no love

$ cvs -d anoncvs at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:/cvsroot co -r cvs pkgsrc
cvs [checkout aborted]: no such tag cvs

Maybe there is something else I can try?
