Managing ports with portupgrade

I'm having some trouble with perl, gettext, and a few other libraries needed
for firefox.  My sequence is pretty simple: cvsup dfports, then freebsd ports,
make fetchindex, then portversion|grep '<'|less.

Still, firefox does not seem to want to build all the way through, and I have
to do parts by hand.  When it comes to gtk, it keeps building perl over and
over.  Gettext breaks because of libXaw3d, but I found a post on using a
symlink (which didn't work) so I just downloaded the package.

Anyway, there must be something I can do to smooth out this process, right?
