Unfortunately, it didn't change anything for mutt.
My LANG environment variable was set to fr_FR.UTF-8.
Without any LANG stuff, mutt runs fine.
X11 applications crash with a different call sequence. I'll try to recompile
all relevant packages and libraries with -g and post again when I'm done.
