:Ive applied the patch but the problem persists. NFS server shares
:/mnt/backup located on external usb hdd. if a NFS client mounts
:/mnt/backup, and then /mnt/backup becomes unavailable, ie. the fs on the
:backup drive is umounted, all processes that try to use /mnt/backup on the
:client get stuck. also programs like df get stuck too, although trying to
:cd into the directory is not permitted (says about nfs mount being stale)

    Ok, this is actually good.  You've given me information I didn't have
    before, i.e. the fact that you pulled the USB stick and unmounted
    the drive on the server while client mounts were still present.

    I should be able to reproduce it and convert it to an I/O error of
    sorts.  Note that generally speaking pulling server mounts out from
    under clients is a bad idea just on general principles.
