vkernel timing

I'm finally testing out vkernels, and noticed that the performance
feels absolutely horrible. Check this out:

rama# \time sleep 2
        3.99 real 0.00 user 0.00 sys

The command in fact takes 4 seconds. Anyone else seeing this, or
is this just a quirk on my machine?
