Works like a charm here (just bought a soekris 4801 too ;-):
Just create file /pfi.conf on FAT formatted usb pen-drive:
This indeed works like a charm. After starting getty on ttyd0, and login
with "installer" I get the following:

login: installer

DragonFly 1.8.1-RELEASE (GENERIC) #2: Mon Mar 26 08:03:12 PDT 2007

Welcome to DragonFly!

Starting installer. Reading /etc/pfi.conf ...
/usr/local/bin/installer: cannot create /dev/ttyv0: Device not configured
vidcontrol: getting active vty: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Installer started
The installer tries to launch a second vty to display stuff. I don't know how that is supposed to work via ssh. I always went the manual fdisk+disklabel+newfs+cpdup route.

maybe a new installer version would fix that?
