amd64 compiler toolchain question

Hopefully the only people that would be affected by some brokenness 
would be folks wanting to play with amd64. And it's not working now,
anyhow :) :) ...

I can probably work through some of the build issues and I"ve got an
extra disk lying around that I could install on and trash.
