make buildworld failure

    Make sure you have a working /tmp AND a working /var/tmp.  usually
    /var/tmp is a softlink pointing to /tmp.

    If that was it I'll take a quick look at the UPDATING instructions to 
    see if there is something wrong with them, or something I can make
    more explicit.
