This is very likely to be the culprit. The cardbus ATA support is laking
behind FreeBSD CURRENT, e.g. I have a FreeCom DVD drive which is supported
by FreeBSD 5, but not by DF. This is a lot of work to get working and
I haven't got the time.

One idea for the installation would be to install FreeBSD 5, copy the
ISO image directly to a spare partition like the (inactive) swap space
and the kernel to root. Use the FreeBSD boot loader to load the kernel
and set the root partition to the spare partition. You should be able
to start from that.
