	I don't know about FreeBSD 5.3 but here is a the mixer.sh script for
/usr/local/etc/rc.d that I use under 4.10

MIXER_FILE=/usr/local/etc/mixer.vals

start)
        if [ -f "$MIXER_FILE" ]
        then
                mixer `cat $MIXER_FILE`
        fi
        ;;
stop)
