The two could work very well together if implimented correctly.  They 
solve two different problems.  I'm not sure if anyone ever suggested to 
choose one over the other.

Package Management Systems can be used for both, as long as the result 
of the source compile is packaged + installed at the end rather than 
dumped into the filesystem.
