I've utilized the 'screen' utility when I'm trapped on a console,
as it also provides a cut-and-paste feature.

But it's not perfect either, as it mucks with wierd tty settings...

I have to admit, I used the vidcontrol/moused combo often _just_
to test-fire a mouse, without the hassle of setting X set up.

X is much easier nowadays, between reasonable probing, and with
DPMS aware monitors...
