:whereas before it always switched back to BIOSPIO after a while.

    Ok, I've committed the patch.  Also note that David Rhodus is working
    on bringing in ATAng from RELENG_4, and we will integrate these changes
    into it as well.

    I added malloc_pipe_t to sys/malloc.h
