    A failure here should not be possible with updated module files.

    Do an 'ls -lta /modules' and check the dates to see if you have any stale
    modules from long ago that the boot loader might be trying to load.  If
    so, 'rm' them.  

    That's my guess... that there are some very old modules that the boot 
    loader is trying to load.
