That may well be the case - I can't duplicate your errors here, so far - a
"clean" effort using the instructions on the page works.

I did have a few typos in my instructions.  (listed /usr/local/ instead of
/usr/local/etc in one spot, etc.)  They shouldn't have been fatal, though. 
Deleting /usr/src and pulling it in again should do the trick.
