Boot locking on ATA setup

I figure I should mention this now that floppy installation of DFBSD is no
longer available. This is a problem I've had for quite some time now with
both FreeBSD 4.x and 5.x and now also with DFBSD. The FreeBSD mailing lists
have a few instances of the problem but no solutions. Here the excerpt of a
'boot -v':

At this point the system hangs. The system producing this message is running
on an ASUS A7V333 board with a VT8233A IDE chipset with a harddrive on
primary master and primary slave and a cddrive on secondary master and dvd
drive on secondary slave. I get the same error though on a system with an
ASUS P2L97/440LX board with a harddrive on primary master and a cddrive on
primary slave. The only way I've gotten past this is to completely remove
the cd drives from the systems, then bootup goes through without any errors
