    kernel - Do not block indefinitely in exit1() when draining controlling tty
    
    * exit1() tries to drain the controlling terminal.  This can block
      indefinitely and signals are no longer operational.  Force a
      1-second timeout for drain attempts.
    
      This is a bit of a hack but it works.
