kernel - Work around bogus gcc errors
* gcc warns of possibly uninitialized variables when using the
builtins in two situations where the variables are, in fact,
initialized for the code path.
* Not really gcc's fault, the code was too complex for its
analysis.
* Zero the variables to fix the warning.
