I this case I knew for certain that userland was still
compatible with the old kernel because userland had not
changed (i.e. cvsup showed only kernel commits).
that's not sufficient. if structures in the kernel change you don't 
neccessarily have commits the userland as well. but in most cases even 
a non-working ps is better than a non-working kernel :)
