This brings me close, but not quite to what I want to achieve.
One of the things I am now working on is trying to hack up a bzip2 based
kgzldr and kgzip utility:

1279915 kernel-1.bz2	- normal -9 bzip2
1298750 kernel.bz2	- -9 bzip2 with -s flag for small mem footprint
1350288 kernel.gz	- normal -9 gzip

A considerable save...
