It looks like bad memory - I pulled out the one removable piece of RAM and
the subsequent install worked.  Thank goodness.

Incidentally, the 'netboot install services' on the install CD is slicker
than I expected.  If it wasn't for the bad RAM, this might have been the
easiest install I've ever done.
