I'm not implicitly asking the installer! The installer is using a
preallocated slice (I don't use the fdisk step in the installer). He's
smart enough to see that I've set the partition type to FreeBSD and
gives me the option to install there.
I will look and see what I can find out, but again, this is not my area
of expertise. I don't even know where to begin looking. This may take a
while!
